my brother just called me late at night, barely able to get two words out because he was laughing so hard. Finally, through the wheezing, he told me “go google the new Gollum game. Please”
So I did. And now I just spent half an hour on the phone nearly dying. We just kept sending eachother pictures of Gollum from the game and LOSING IT all over again. I haven’t laughed this hard in YEARS.
I mean, this image alone from an OFFICIAL GAMER MAGAZINE REVIEW is the perfect reaction pic - it expresses every single human emotion all at the same time. I honestly don’t think we’ll ever top this uncanny valley delight:
omfg also as if this wasn’t funny enough already, my gf was telling me last night about how the game is apparently just. an unbelievably buggy mess according to people who got early review copies. to the point where the PS4 version is just straight-up unplayable because it literally crashes every 15 minutes.
the kicker? they eventually did find out what was causing all the crashing and it was the setting to enable Gollum’s hair physics, which was turned on by default.
everything about this game’s existence feels like a fucking fever dream. even just the idea of “a game where you play as Gollum” feels like a shitpost to begin with.

It very much annoys me when people see 3D graphics as inherently superior to pixel art and sprites and that the latter are primitive and unimpressive by comparison. Numerous games have exemplary and beautiful examples of pixel art that are more eye-catching than many 3D models. Take Golden Sun 2 for example;
Every element of this is pixel art. From the background to the character sprites and the transparent column of ice that the Mercury Djinn Serac creates around the Wonder Bird monster as well as the triangles of ice that arise from it being shattered and the rings of mist that arise around the column.
Masterful.
Everything here actually is a 3D model! The background and the character sprites are all prerendered 3D (remember how Donkey Kong Country’s graphics were made? This is the exact same thing)
The column of ice is where things get really impressive though: it’s not pixel art or prerendered, the game is actually rendering 3D objects in real time entirely on the GBA’s CPU! That slowdown when those rings appear isn’t just for dramatic effect, the game is actually lagging from drawing all the polygons for both the 3D rings and the icicle!
It’s easy to think of the GBA as just a portable SNES with some added features, and while that’s mostly true on the graphics hardware side, the GBA’s CPU is actually much, much more powerful than the SNES’s CPU! If you remember the original Star Fox on the SNES, that game needed a whole second processor called the SuperFX chip to do the heavy lifting for its 3D graphics, since the SNES’s main CPU just could not handle that kind of processing load while getting any kind of framerate that’s even remotely playable. Golden Sun in comparison is doing all these 3D calculations entirely on the GBA’s CPU, which is also juggling the game’s main logic and sound engine at the same time!
(None of this should take away from your main point though! Pixel art is incredibly impressive too, just as much as 3D is! Most of Golden Sun’s backgrounds outside of battle are pixel art and they look amazing!)
(I’m so sorry for “well ackshually”-ing your post, Golden Sun is just a huge special interest of mine and the technical side of this game is endlessly fascinating to me ^^; )
(btw: if you want to see an example of what 3D on the GBA can look like when pushed to its limits, check out Asterix and Obelix: XXL! that game is absurdly impressive)
I think everyone needs to start posting about how many people have been coming out in solidarity with trans people everywhere in the US especially in vulnerable states, because I’m really touched by what happened at the University of Iowa. These kids shut it down because it’s not just a youtube bigot on their campus it’s so much bigger than that! This is huge
People ARE coming out and packing courthouses and protesting on campuses and in the middle of your town and city in defense of trans people in great numbers. Very few people attended this loser’s speech and were publicly shamed for it. There are literally more of us than there are of them and I think we need to keep saying that
Platforming good things is crucial right now.
Bombarding people will every possible variation of horrible that's going on right now reaches a threshold where it's no longer useful and only fosters despair. It makes people think there's no point, no hope for anything.
But there is! The hateful minority IS that, hateful and a minority. And every time people come in and show support, it's important to put it out. It's important to let ourselves be validated. We're not alone, we're not ignored, we're not facing this fight isolated and without hope.
Be informed, absolutely, but make sure you're not poisoning yourself, letting those who hate you paint a world where you're alone and no one cares. Solidarity matters, and it's out there, if you look for it. Platform it.
